I don’t know all the physics behind the freezing idea. It might make sense but like you, I would be worried it would make the connector brittle. The best suggestion I can give is to try and rock the connector back and forth. This usually works for these hard to remove connectors. I’ve done enough device repair that I have a feel for how much I can pull on something but just use your best judgement.
