I have looked around but can’t seem to find a straight answer for this. The most recent answers I find are from 2015. Is it possible to switch out the on board flash storage for a third party M2 SSD such as the Samsung EVO 970 PCIe NVMe like the one here?
No. They just don’t work reliably. Stay with ones made for Mac like the OWC or Transcend. https://eshop.macsales.com/upgrades/macb… https://us.transcend-info.com/Products/N…
I have managed to upgrade my 13’ Macbook pro early 2015 to Samsung 970 EVO NVME SSD drive with an adapter. I’ve written my experience here: http://www.coupleintech.com/samsung-970-… I did not encounter any sleep/wake issues many have previously reported, I believe they are due to early MacOS versions.
I recommend using NVME Samsung 970 evo / pro. By making a bootable USB of Mojave or Sierra according to your needs, your Mac customize. I do not think there is a way to think of a model dating nearly 4 years old from OWC or transcending it with problems related to the speed of writing / updating for OWC FW.
