Here’s the thing: I’ve owned a A1224 20" Aluminum iMac for 2 years but recently purchased (used) a A1181 Macbook 13"…I’d basically like to swap the harddrives, is this possible? iMac: 320gb (7200) Macbook: 160gb (5400) Will either machine accept the other’s harddrive? Will the faster speed affect performance of the Macbook (i.e. will their be issues with overheating, change in power usage, etc.)? I haven’t opened either machine, so I suppose this is all assuming the sizes match up. Update Thanks for the replies….I’ve gotten a new harddrive and have done the migration successfully.

the imac uses a 3.5" hdd and the macbook a 2.5" hdd - you can’t put the 3.5 into the macbook, but the 2.5 would work in the imac

Hi! While you can’t put the physical hard disk from your desktop into your laptop, you probably just want the data off it. Get a new hard disk for your macbook (500 Gig 7,200 is about $100 US). Install. Boot the macbook into target mode (turn on while holding down the T button) Connect to your iMac via firewire. On your iMac, go to Applications / Utilities and run Migration assistant. Good to go!
