Is it possible to take out the DVD drive without screwing up the system in order to get better airflow as it overheats often?
Yes, it is possible. However, if the iMac is overheating, then I suggest cleaning out the heatsinks/fans and replacing the thermal compound. The instructions for these can be found on the iMac repair page. Make sure you use the right guide for your model! Good luck!
