I have a MacBook Air 2012 and I want to change the Logic board for better performance on MacOS Catalina and I was wondering if I could put a 2016 Logic Board that has the same model numbers my logic board on my MacBook Air for 2012. I think it should work cause both computer have the Model Number A1466 but I really don’t know Update (05/17/2021) Where can I buy a Logic board with 8GB of RAM and a intel i7 for a cheap price Is there also a iFixit toolkit for replacing a logic board for macs?

While that would work if the generations were the same, the models between generations are completely incompatible. Even if the boards are shaped exactly the same, which they are not, there are subtle differences with zero tolerances and it wouldn’t fit. The cables wouldn’t connect properly and power wouldn’t be supplied properly either since the PMU (Power Management Unit) board wouldn’t recognize the board. Your SSD wouldn’t work because they changed the way the drives connect to the board.

The best you can install is a 8GB board in the 2012 model: MacBook Air 13" (Mid 2012) 1.8 GHz Logic Board and heres the guide to put it in MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 Logic Board Replacement For reference here’s the 2017 board (there is no 2016 model) MacBook Air 13" (2017) 1.8 GHz Logic Board Which will not work in your system.
