Hi Community, I had this problem where the cord had to bent in a certain way in order for the MacBook to charge. I’ve seen a lot of self-help repair guides on how to repair the 60w Magsafe cord, but none mentioning consequences if I were to mess up the repair. In particular, if I were to solder the wires incorrectly to the wrong connectors then tried to power the Macbook with the cord connected, would I burn the logic board? Or, if I soldered the wires to the right connectors but did a poor job soldering the wires, would I burn the logic board when I try to power the Macbook with the cord connected? If not the logic board, what part would be damaged? Thanks in advance
Sadly, yes you can damage the computer.
A proper charger can be found for thirty something dollars. Please do not do this, you can sodomize and destroy the onewire circuit which communicates with the SMC; a chip that uses 0.3mm balls. SMC chips can only be had off of donor boards and requires reballing a chip that may or may not work just to put it on yours. This is a miserable, miserable repair to undertake and is absolutely not worth the risk to save $30 to $50 on a new charger. Don’t buy the Chinese junk chargers either.
