Can an iMac with snow leopard OS work with a newer iMac El Capitan OS? or will I have to have the same OS in both machines to network back and forth?

It seems to me it will work using a FireWire. If it won’t work , it will tell you. If it will, there could be some minor differences but it will tell or lead you through the process.
