Do you have access to a second Mac system? If you do you could setup yours in Target Disk Mode and using a FireWire cable connect your other system. Reference: Understanding the Applications for Target Disk Mode. Are you sure your drive is the correct one for your system and the HD SATA cable is in good shape? Your system can only support a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive, using a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive can be very problematic! Some drives are fixed only able to run at SATA III, others offer sensing logic to match the systems I/O speed. You’ll need to review the given drives spec sheet to see if it lists SATA II if it does then its an auto sense drive, if not then you need to find another drive either a SATA II or an auto sense drive. A second issue is the HD SATA cable can get damaged! You’ll need to replace it, and you’ll also want to apply a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase to help protect it Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb.
