Last month I left my Late 2009 iMac 21.5 alone for ten minutes and when I came back the screen was black. It wouldn’t wake from the black screen, I powered down, powered back up, there was no startup chime, I took out the hard drive and found that it wouldn’t spin up when connected to my external HD kit. I ordered a replacement drive kit for this model, installed it, made sure all the cables were seated correctly, plugged it in, black screen. I have an adapter to use a VGA monitor with the iMac, but that is also black. I put the original install DVD in, it pulled into the iMac, I could hear it seeking, and nothing happened. I was able to eject the disc with the eject key on the keyboard. The fans are working. What can I do next? I see an LED light through the vents underneath and when I power on the iMac a second light lights, but that’s it..
Try to start it up. Shine a flashlight at an angle to the screen and see if you can discern the desktop and let us know. When it’s booted (and I don’t know if this can be done) see if you can see those LED diagnostic lights and tell us how many are on.
