What is the best (fastest) version of OS X for a Late 2007 MBP with a 2.2 ghz C2D, 4gb RAM, and an HDD? I don’t plan on upgrading anything. From what I recall from a few years ago, Mavericks ran fine and Yosemite ran horribly. But I was wondering what option would performance best now – El Capitan, Mavericks, Snow Leopard, or something else?

The last OS this system supported was El Capitan 10.11.x Each progressive release since Mavericks 10.9.x adds processing weight with the new features added which is why you often need to increase the memory from its base of 2 GB to 6 GB which I would recommend any ways. Now the other shoe falls… Traveling on the wild west of the internet is now very dangerous for these older systems given the fact Apple no longer offers any OS security updates and most antivirus apps have moved on to 64bit so finding one that offers the needed protection will be difficult. Using it for writing, playing CD/DVD’s is about all thats safe to do with this system.
