Chosen Solution
We recently got a 3DS it worked fine to begin with. But in the last day it will work when plugged in, and the battery symbol indicates it is charging. But when we unplug it is only one bar of battery
@manxunicorn replace the battery first. This could be simply caused by an old battery that no longer holds a charge. Nintendo 3DS Battery Replacement Since it indicates that it is charging it is unlikely a charging port issue but you will have to check on that later
