I recently put a new screen on top my late 2013 macbook pro, (old one got smashed). On boot up the screen comes, but if put it to sleep/shut the lid the backlight doesn’t come on, and also the brightness can’t be set, tried using keys and the setting in system pref. Originallly thought it was SMC/NVRAM/PRAM, so tried those reset methods quite a few times, no change. I shined a torch through the rear logo, and can see the display very dimly. I took the new screen off and put the old one back, and the old screen brightness and waking from sleep works as expected, so I assume that the fuse and connector on the board are all good. Any ideas? Is it just the new display is faulty? Cheers

I think you’ll need to test the lid sensor (Hall sensor). You’ll need rare earth magnet and a steel paperclip. Slide the paperclip along the face of the display to locate the magnet hidden inside on the right side once you locate it fold the lid down and using a piece of colored tape or Post-It note tab mark the upper case its location. Now slide the magnet along the top of the uppercase on the right side while your system is running. As you slide it across the marker the display should turn off and when you slide it off the display should turn on. Let us know what you discover!
