Backlight is regularly either off when starting up or flickers then turns off while using. Opening and closing the lid sometimes turns it back on. New screen fitted by Apple 6 months ago and new battery also. Ive checked the data cable looks ok to me. If anyone could help regarding this one would be awesome! Macbook pro Retina 15” mid 2014 Thanks

Hi again

After dissembling the screen, the connectors and bar were looking really good. The screen is only 1 year old from Apple and I don’t use liquid to clean. I couldn’t see any corrosion.

However, I took it to a guy and he said it was the screen problem, needed a replacing and he could if I sourced a new one for him to fit.

Added up to quite hefty sum and I told him I’d like to try and fix it first, not sure how accurate his diagnosis was, I think he just plugged a 2012 lid in and saw that the backlight worked. But it works ~30% if of the time anyway!

Apologies for the late update, would appreciate if you could help me with the next step to attempt repair!

Many thanks Dan

Lets get a better idea how things look. Follow this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014 Display Assembly Replacement Follow it to Step 4 fully disconnecting the battery, now jump down to Step 11. With the cable disconnected take a tight picture of the two connector faces just like the last slide shows (focusing on the connector its self) as I’ve done here:

Post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question Update (04/19/2020) @tfraz - Good pics! I was hoping it would have been an easy fix, the connector faces look good! So now comes the hard work ;-{ Either the cable is damaged or the connector within the display assembly is damaged. Or, going the other way the backlight logic is damaged. The display is more likely the area we need to look at. Do you use a spray cleaner to clean the screen? If you do I would follow the guide I posted taking the display assembly off as its likely the cleaner dried down and has corrosion. Carefully pop off the clutch cover to inspect displays connectors just like we did here. My guess is there is a bit of corrosion on the either the cables connector or the boards connector.
