Chosen Solution

Hello all. First time posting here - shamefully, with such a basic inquiry. Preface… I’ve read every single source of information I could possibly find, with incessant confusing or contradicting info. A few emails to iFixit support was an absolute waste of time as well. They literally told me to do everything I mentioned in my message, as if they didn’t even read it. Disappointing exchange, but oh well…. I’m busting open my mid12 MBPr 15” to clean it out really well, particularly the fans d/t them revving up more frequently and seeming to be a bit louder than before. I’m comfortable with all that, but I’ll be starting from scratch (re: 0% experience) so I’ll need an anti-static mat / strap setup to work on, and I planned on getting the portable one sold here. Could someone be so kind to help me out by explaining specifically what I’ll need to do to procure a safe workspace? Will I need a ground plug adapter? I don’t really have anything to ground to (besides outlet), and my desktop is made of glass. Honestly just looking for some streamlined guidance so I can finally get started on my project. Thanks in advance for your time!

Yes, you do need to check your ground connection! Use this device HomeDept - 3-Wire Receptacle Tester and you will need to test the outlet again if you go to another work area. You also should check your breaker panels connection to ground. Clean the area of un-needed stuffMake sure you have adequate lighting at the work areaPlace the antistatic mat down on the surface you are planing on work atPlace the cord snaps to the side, the back one for the outlet lead, the front one for the wrist strap (if the mat has one, if not use the alligator to banana clip onto the matTest the outlet with a receptacle testerPlug in the 3 prong ground adapterPlug in the banana plug of the mat cord into the adapterTake your system, tools & any parts placed on the mat.Sit down at the desk, place the wrist strap onto your wrist - Wait! At least 30 sec’s to allow your body to discharge Start the job! If you leave make sure everything is on the mat that is static sensitive, When you sit back down don’t touch anything other than the wrist strap, put it on and again Wait! At least 30 sec’s to allow your body to discharge before starting up again.
