Whenever I receive an AirDropped photo sent to my laptop I get a notification that pops up in the top right hand corner that says “received item from…” and I have the option to cancel or open the file. I USED to hit open and the file would open right away, but now it can take well over a minute or simply never open at all. I noticed this happen after updating my laptop to 10.13.x What changed? Why can’t I use this simple feature anymore? Thanks!

I would recommend you post a bug report with Apple. Sometimes older systems are not tested enough so things fall thru the cracks. I would recommend booting up with an external drive which has the older version of OS. There is a bit of a wrinkle here as when you upgraded from Sierra to Hight Sierra the installer also updated your drives file system it was HFS+ to APFS. So going back to Sierra won’t be possible. Frankly, I find Hight Sierra has too many issues and highly recommend going the Mojave 10.14.6 being the current and best macOS. I would not go to Catalina as its still to buggy! Hopefully the next maintenance release fixes things. Generally, I always make a fresh backup before do a major release when the file system is altered as in this case. In every major release I also create bootable external drive with my current macOS as well as the needed OS installer so if needed I can roll it back. While rare, having a plan B is always a good idea!
