I have a similar problem with my 2016 LG 3-D TV. After I turn it on in a few seconds the screen goes black but I still have sound. Called LG and went thru everything but no results. They gave me a couple service guys but I don’t think they will be any better with replacing boards. Anyone have a suggestion on which component I should try to replace first? If it wasn’t 3D I would just give up and get a new TV. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Christopher Coyle could be a backlight issue. Once the screen is black but you do have audio, in a darkened room, shine a flashlight beam at an angle against the screen. See if you can make out shapes/silhouettes etc. If so it is most likely that your backlight strips have failed. For anything further we really would need to know the exact model of your TV and see the boards. That means you would have to remove the back cover from your TV and check the boards.
