Chosen Solution

I am replacing both my battery and the Lightening connector assembly. With those items replaced, I started reassembling the phone, working my way back up the break down list. The first problem was in trying to reconnect the Lightning port connector (Step 36). In spite of all screws lining up correctly (and being careful to line up the two white dots as described in Step 59), the Lightning port connector ribbon cable was misaligned by a millimeter or so. I eventually got it there but I’m not happy about how much I had to force it. With the screen reconnected I powered it up for a test. I have these issues… On startup it displayed a message saying there was a problem with the taptic button and an onscreen Home button could be used instead. From the top of the screen:

  1. Cell bars cycle with “Searching” displayed—
  2. It’s been plugged in for an hour and there’s no indication it’s charging.
  3. Most of the apps I’ve tried to launch (Music, Facetime, BusyCal, Mail, Settings and others) on fail. That is, it’s just a white screen. I double-tap the onscreen Home button and I can see the apps as if they were available. They are not. On the other hand…
  • The screen works and responds to touch.
  • Camera works.
  • Speaker works (tested by editing alarms).
  • Some apps work: Alarms, Safari, Chrome, Messages. Any thought and suggestions on how I can get back on track are appreciated. I’m pretty much stumped. Thanks!

It looks like you have three problems. 1.       No cell signal. There are two antenna leads that need to be connected. They come from the dock connector and connect to the logic board. 2.       Faulty home button. The most common cause for this is a damaged flex. You might need magnification to see it. It occurs at the 90 degree bend of the home button flex. The one that connects to the logic board. You will need to replace the screen in order for the home button to function. 3.       Not charging. If it was charging before the repair it will be that the dock connector is faulty or you haven’t installed it properly.
