It seems to work when it is closed gently, but if it is closed with any amount of force (specifically on the right side) it turns off. This does not happen when it is plugged in to the charger. I have literally no experience with taking apart small electronics, so any input would be helpful.

It sounds like there may be a loose connection between the top screen and the bottom half where the motherboard is located. If you are not familiar with taking things apart, you would need to have it sent away to have it repaired. Otherwise, it would involve you taking it apart and checking the connections. Worse case scenario, you would need to replace the top screen or the motherboard, or both.
