Chosen Solution
I just bought a 2000 dodge neon. The check engine light is on and im being told its because the speedometer is not working. Everything else works on the dash just not the speedometer. When i reset the gauges the needle for the speedometer moves in synce with everything else but after does not work or move at all. I had it checked at autozone and it codes P0601 came up stating PCM random access memory failure. And P0500 speed sensor malfunction and gave no suggested parts to buy. Help?
@nicky503 “P0500 speed sensor malfunction” is the most likely culprit. Replacing the speed sensor should get your speedometer working again. The output speed sensor on the trans runs the speedometer. Cost for that is around $35USD
REMOVAL (1) Disconnect electrical connector from sensor. (2) Remove the sensor mounting bolt. (3) Lift the sensor out of the transaxle extension housing. Ensure the O-ring was removed with the sensor. INSTALLATION The speed sensor gear meshes with a gear on the output shaft. (1) With O-ring in place, install sensor. (2) Install mounting bolt. (3) Connect electrical connector to sensor.
