My 2017 13” Macbook Pro battery is acting weird for last couple of months. I bought it last year on February. Most of the time I connect it with an external monitor while closing down the lid. This requires me to keep my power cable attached all the time. I used to let the battery drain at least once a week, but other time i kept the power cable plugged. Earlier this week the problem started to appear. Firstly my macbook pro just shut down when the charge is around 38%. I had to plug the power cable to start it again. After a while I noticed the battery indicator was showing incorrect results all the time. It just jumped up and down every now and then. After a while it didn’t need to drain down to 38% to shut down. It started to happen after just a few minutes of use after charging the battery all the way to 100%. Specially I noticed then when i ran something CPU intensive, that’s when it shut down. I tried resetting SMC many times it didn’t help. Only time it makes a difference is when after shutting down i press power button, it shows big red battery low indicator with connect to power cable sign. Then if I reset the SMC and then hit the power button again, then it starts, runs a few minutes and then shut down again. I ran coconut battery and here’s the screenshot of the status.
kept track of the coconut battery status when I run something CPU intensive, I often noticed that the design capacity go all the way down to 8% and couple of minutes later it again climbs up to 68-72%. It never gets higher than that. Here’s the screenshot from macOS’s system information on power:
Sometimes my battery indicator turns red even if the charge is over 90%. Now I am confused, is it just battery issue or there’s something wrong with the logic board or both? What should I do now?
See if your system is covered by this recall 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) Battery Replacement Program Update (07/24/2019) OK, I think you’ll need to still talk with Apple as your battery level is not where it should be given the age and the number of cycles you’ve put on the battery. I would just walk in to an Apple Store as you often get a long song and dance over the phone. I would press them on a warranty exception as the battery is in trouble here. Be polite but firm and if you get a no ask to see the service manager. If that fails press to speak with the store manager and then the regional service manager. You may need to split the cost at the worst.
